The Transit Center is becoming DSTL Arts

Yup, we’ve been quiet for a while now. It’s been a few weeks since we last shared anything with the world, but it’s because we’ve been extremely busy.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s been going on in the The Transit Center’s world:

1. We’ve moved! We were previously operating out of our founder’s apartment in the Los Angeles-based community of Echo Park, California, and we still are, but the apartment isn’t the same. We’ve moved to a bigger, more creative-friendly space in Glassell Park, only minutes away from Echo Park. Our students, Ana, Brian, and Erick are still meeting us at the Edendale Branch of the LA Public Library, but from there we’re going to the new place and creating more art.

2. We’ve been meeting with people, a lot of people, and we’ve secured a location for our first-ever Arts-Mentorship Program art show! It’s schedule for Saturday, August 3rd from 2:00pm–5:00pm at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, a local museum celebrating the Mexican-American heritage of Los Angeles. More details will be made available as the date gets closer.

3. Here’s the really big news…The Transit Center is rebranding itself and will be known as DSTL Arts beginning in the next two weeks. Thanks to our good friend L.J. Fogel, we have strategically developed a new name for our wonderful arts-based nonprofit which better explains what we are all about. DSTL Arts (pronounced Distill Arts) explains more clearly the work that we are doing with our students: Developing Skills, Transcending Limits. The overall vision of DSTL Arts is to distill the talents of our students into the purest form possible and help them overcome the challenges and limits they face as at-risk youth.

As DSTL Arts, we are still developing and fine tuning our new brand identity, but you can help by giving us your opinion about our new logo here.

We are hoping to finalize our logo and rebranding by the end of next week, and all feedback is welcome. Our students and board members have been given an opportunity to share their opinions, and we look forward to hearing from more voices, more supporters.

And as a parting note, we would like to also announce that our founders, Luis Antonio Pichardo and Jennifer Fuentes have both been selected as featured artists for an upcoming art show in Hollywood, CA, at the famous Hollywood and Highland Center’s Level 3 Nightclub. Tickets for the art show are $15 each, and a portion of Luis and Jennifer’s sales will go to benefit our Arts-Mentorship Program. Sponsor Luis and/or Jennifer by purchasing a ticket from them at either www.rawartists.org/stimeyluv1 or at www.rawartists.org/crayonliterati.

There’s a lot going on over the next couple of months, including art shows and rebranding, so stay tuned with our future updates. You don’t want to miss out.
